“I’m not the tea lady!” [to the Doctor] – Terror Of The Autons

Jo Grant (Katy Manning) was brought in following Liz Shaw’s departure to fill in as the Doctor’s assistant in Terror Of The Autons – 1971.

Introduced as an audience explanation device, to breakdown the more Sci-Fi elements of the plot by asking the simple questions and demanding the simple answers.

She was a very different character from her predecessor; Liz Shaw – she was younger, easier going and very much in awe of the Doctor. She did not have the Scientific Academic background that Liz Shaw did. Jo was a ‘Civil’ contractor – working for UNIT.

Her main role was to basically fetch the Doctor cups of teas and test tubes. She was however, lucky enough to be around when the Doctor got the ability back to time travel and accompanied him on many journeys. She also had the misfortune to have many run in’s with the first Master, The Sea Devils and The Daleks.

She stayed with the Third Doctor for 3 Seasons, before leaving in the Environmental shocker The Green Death – 1973, after finding love with an Environmental Professor.
