“What are you a doctor of? …..by the way?” Liz Shaw – Spearhead From Space
Not merely a pretty face!
Liz Shaw (played by Caroline John), was a Special UNIT advisor and was brought in to advise Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
During Spearhead From Space – 1970, Liz Shaw was thrust into a new working partnership, with the newly regenerated Third Doctor. No easy feat – all considered, as the Third Doctor was acting eccentric; due to post-regenerative stress.
Liz Shaw was intelligent, forthright and held strong convictions. This was a challenge for the Doctor; who – upto that point, had been used to less forthright or effective female companions.
“All the Doctor really needed was someone to hold his test tubes!” – Liz Shaw – Inferno.
Initially, Liz Shaw became the Doctor’s researcher; checking information for him – and running scientific tests.
Liz was initially skeptical of the existence of other alien species. However, following time with Doctor, Liz soon revised her opinion; upon meeting the Autons.
Liz also encountered the Silurians in Doctor Who And The Silurians – 1970 and radioactive alien spacemen; in The Ambassadors Of Death – 1970.
Liz also appeared as an ‘evil alternate reality’ version of herself in Inferno – 1970. This version of Liz, worked for a fascist and militaristic version of UNIT.
Liz was never happy, merely fetching and carrying for the Doctor and eventually left; at the end of Inferno. Having resigned from UNIT to pursue other employment.
Liz appeared again, in a cameo role – as a phantom of the mind in the Timelord Deadzone; in The Five Doctors – 1983.
