“What are you a doctor of? …..by the way?” Liz Shaw – Spearhead From Space
Not merely – a pretty face.
Liz Shaw (Caroline John), was a Special UNIT advisor initially brought in, to advise Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
It was during the events of Spearhead From Space – 1970, that Liz Shaw was thrust into a working partnership with the newly regenerated Third Doctor. No easy feat, considering that the Third Doctor was acting eccentric; due to post-regenerative stress.
Liz Shaw was intelligent, forthright and strong in her convictions, with a scientific mind. She was a definite challenge for the Doctor, who (upto that point) had been used to less forthright female companions; who did not question him.
“All the Doctor really needed was someone to hold his test tubes!” – Liz Shaw – Inferno.
She became the Doctor’s researcher, checking information for him – and running scientific tests. Initially skeptical of alien existence, she soon revised her opinion – upon meeting the Auton’s and the Nestene.
Liz encountered the Silurians in Doctor Who And The Silurians – 1970 and radioactive spacemen – in The Ambassadors Of Death – 1970. However, Liz’s biggest part was to play an ‘alternate reality’ version of herself in Inferno – 1970. This version of Liz worked for a fascist militaristic version of UNIT.
Liz was never happy, merely caddying for the Doctor and left – at the end of Inferno – resigning from UNIT to pursue other employment.
She appeared in a cameo, as a phantom of the mind in the Timelord Deadzone – in The Five Doctor’s – 1983.
