“If you value life……obey!….. and do not anger us!” Vardan, Ice Warrior – Ice Warriors – 1967

Lumbering cold-preferring lizards – with breathing problems

The Ice Warriors, Ice Lords or ‘Greenies’ [derogatory] – (as they were sometimes known). Hailed from the planet Mars. They were powerfully large, armoured reptillian bipeds; with flat faces, large black eyes, fangs – and large clawed hands.

They preferred the cold Martian, or Earth Arctic climates but were herbivores – in nature. Ice Warriors were driven by honour, fighting for – pride and karma.

The Ice Warriors first appearance, was in the Second Doctor’s serial The Ice Warriors – 1967; with the Earth in the grip of a new ice age – in the year 3000.

A team of Scientists, discovered a Ice Warrior ship; buried beneath the Arctic ice. Once revived, the Ice Warriors went on a rampage through the Scientist’s base but were overcame by the Doctor; who caused their ship to explode, – on an intended return to Mars.

The Ice Warriors next appearance, happened in The Seeds Of Death – 1968; the Ice Warriors took over a human molecular transporter (T-Mat) device – based on the moon. Their intention, was to use the T-Mat to transport toxic seeds onto Earth; which were intended to alter the atmosphere, to be more like that of Mars.

They made brief cameo appearances, as visions in the Second Doctor – final adventure; The War Games – 1969 and the Third Doctor serial The Mind Of Evil – 1971.

The final Ice Warrior appearances, were in the Third Doctor linked serials The Curse Of Peladon- 1973  and The Monster Of Peladon – 1974. This time around, the Ice Warriors had renounced their previous war-like ways – and were acting as peace-keeping troops, as part of the Galactic Federation.

Although in The Monster Of Peladon – 1974., a small breakaway-group of renegade Ice Warriors, invaded Peladon; under the banner of the Federation. It turned out infact, they were really secretly working – in collusion with the Federation’s enemy; Galaxy-5.

After this time, the Ice Warriors fell out of favour; with future Who producers. Which was most likely, due to keeping their peaceful ways. None of the future (classic) Doctors, ran into them again.
