The Ice Warriors, Ice Lords or ‘Greenies’ [derogatory] – as they were sometimes known, hailed from the planet Mars. They were large imposing armoured reptillian biped’s with flat faces, large black eyes, fangs and large clawed hands.
Their first appearance was in the Second Doctor’s serial The Ice Warriors – 1967, with the Earth in the grip of a new ice age – in the year 3000.
A team of Scientists discovered a Warrior ship, buried beneath the ice – in the Artic. Once revived, the Ice Warrior’s went on the rampage through the Scientist’s base but were overcame by the Doctor who caused their ship to explode, on an intended take-off to return home to Mars.
Their next sortie to Earth, happened in The Seeds Of Death – 1968, The Ice Warrior’s took over a human molecular Transporter (T-Mat) base on the moon. Their intention was to use the T-Mat to transport toxic seeds onto Earth, which were intended to alter the atmosphere – to more like that of Mars.
The final appearances were in the Third Doctor linked serials The Curse Of Peladon- 1973 and The Monster Of Peladon – 1974. This time around, the Ice Warriors had renounced their previous war-like ways and were acting as peace keeping troops, as part of an Galactic Federation coalition.
Although in The Monster Of Peladon – 1974. a small breakaway group of renegade Ice Warriors invaded Peladon, under the banner of the Federation but where infact secretly working in collusion with the Federation’s enemy; Galaxy-5.
After this time, the Ice Warriors fell out of favour with future Who producers. Which was most likely, due to keeping their peaceful ways; none of the future (classic) Doctor’s ran into them again.
