“What are you a doctor of? …..by the way?” Liz Shaw – Spearhead From Space

Not merely a pretty face.

Liz Shaw (Caroline John) was a Special UNIT advisor initially brought in to advise Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

It was during the events of Spearhead From Space – 1970, that Liz Shaw was thrust into a working partnership with the newly regenerated Third Doctor, who was acting a little bit eccentric – due to post regen-stress.

Liz Shaw was intelligent, forthright and strong in her convictions, with a scientific mind. She was a definite challenge for the Doctor, who upto that point had been used to lesser strong female companions – who did not question him.

“All the Doctor really needed was someone to hold his test tubes!” – Liz Shaw – Inferno.

She became the Doctor’s researcher, checking information for him and running scientific tests. Initially skeptical of alien existence, she soon revised her opinion upon meeting the Auton’s and the Nestene.

Liz encountered the Silurians in Doctor Who And The Silurians – 1970 and radioactive spacemen in The Ambassadors Of Death – 1970. However, Liz’s biggest part was to play an alternate reality version of herself in Inferno – 1970, working for a fascist  militaristic version of UNIT.

Liz was never happy merely caddying for the Doctor and left at the end of Inferno – resigning from UNIT to pursue other academic employment.

She appeared in a cameo, as a phantom of the mind – in the Timelord Deadzone in The Five Doctor’s – 1983.
